GSMA – Our role in the mobile industry

The GSMA is the global industry association that helps shape the future of the mobile industry. Our mission is to act as a guiding beacon for the mobile industry, focusing on activities where collective action can deliver significant benefit. Spanning 219 countries, the GSMA unites nearly 800 of the world's mobile operators, as well as more than 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, including handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies, and media and entertainment organisations.

The GSMA is focused on innovating, incubating and creating new opportunities for its membership, all with the end goal of driving the growth of the mobile communications industry.

The GSMA is also established as a major inter-industry resource, partnering with industries across the mobile ecosystem in order to enable growth through mobile technologies, programmes and frameworks.

We act as a “think tank” for the mobile community focusing on strategic and policy initiatives that will impact the direction of the industry.

Our organisation engages with a wide range of governments, regulators and NGOs (such as The World Bank, UN and philanthropic organisations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to advocate for the mobile industry and develop the social and economic value of mobile for countries, regions and continents.

The Role

Reporting into the Head of Asia Pacific and as part of the APAC Senior Management Team, you will be responsible for providing the technical expertise and resource for GSMA’s APAC region. This will involve leading technical projects as well as being the technical expert and reference point for broader GSMA activities both within the organisation and in relations with our members.  You will need to demonstrate clear understanding of mobile telecoms end-to-end systems and be comfortable communicating this at a range of levels of detail, to make understanding of complex ideas accessible to both internal and external audiences with wide-ranging levels of technical understanding.  You will also be required to attend some GSMA working groups when needed, to provide technical overviews and descriptions of general industry topics and specific GSMA projects.  You may be required to attend meetings of other industry forums.

You will have a good understanding of existing and future mobile technology and network architecture, and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the future industry trends and their likely impacts on mobile network evolution and development. You will be able to articulate potential industry positions in areas of confluence of Mobile with other verticals, including, but not limited to, banking and finance, healthcare, education, and other service industries where mobile technology plays a critical role in shifting paradigms for solution delivery. You will also be able to demonstrate the ability to understand the commercial implications of technical decisions and vice versa.


Role and Responsibilities

  • Lead technical projects as well as being the technical expert and reference point for broader GSMA activities in region.
  • Working closely with Global Head of Technology to ensure programme delivery strategy is fit for purpose in region.
  • Manage Working Group and Regional Interest Group activity in region.
  • Work closely with any relevant Technical Specification Groups.
  • Technical design and support for the implementation and operation of technical solutions for in-market trials/deployments and within GSMA industry events for showcasing new business opportunities.
  • Engage with member CTOs in region.
  • Responsible for input towards regional business planning for technology.
  • Manage programme delivery in region against HQ KPIs and member expectations.
  • Responsible for delivering within the annual regional budget allocation.
  • Responsible for regional reporting in accordance with HQ requirements, presenting progress against regional KPIs and defining corrective action where appropriate.
  • Foster the necessary consultation, communications and good relations within the wider organisation, including staff of member organisations.
  • Line and performance management of regional team.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and flexibly with stakeholders and facilitate a collaborative approach

Person Specification

  • Significant experience in a technology role within the Mobile Telecoms sector, with at least 3 years in a senior decision-making capacity
  • Knowledge of a range of existing and emerging mobile network technologies
  • Knowledge of commonly used internet standards and their relevance to network operators
  • A proven track record of interacting with internal and external stakeholders, including C-level executives
  • Excellent customer relationship and stakeholder manager capabilities, able to generate trust, long-term engagement and commitment
  • Able to lead projects from inception to completion, often involving a broad mix of individuals and companies with diverse skill sets
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in the escalation of issues and the formulation of solutions
  • Attention to detail and understanding of need for high quality documentation
  • Evidence of a high quality of delivery in a complex and challenging environment
  • Experience of working with international organisations, customers and partners. Experience of working in the APAC region is a must
  • Willing to work within and, as necessary, lead teams of dispersed professionals in a matrix organisation
  • Strong intellect, able to work with abstract concepts through to detailed solutions that are understandable, agreeable and implementable
  • Excellent English, both verbal and written. Fluency in other major regional languages is an advantage


This role will require travel across the Asia-Pacific region.
