GSMA – Our role

The GSMA represents the interests of the worldwide mobile operator community. Spanning 219 countries, the GSMA unites nearly 800 of the world's mobile operators as its members, as well as linking them with more than 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem (including; handset makers, software companies, equipment providers, Internet companies, and media and entertainment organizations). The GSMA is focused on innovating, incubating and creating new opportunities for its membership, with the end goal of driving the growth of the mobile communications sector and the role of operators within it. In addition, we work with Governments, regulators and NGO’s to develop the social and economic value of mobile on a country, region and global basis. Finally we operate and produce the world leading Mobile World Congress and its sister events.

The GSMA is governed by a 25 member board, comprising CEO level representatives from the world's leading mobile operators, among them AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, NTTDoCoMo, Orange, Telefonica, Telecom Italia-TIM, Deutsche Telecom and the Vodafone Group.

Role Description

This is a mid-level PM role, it will focus on 2 areas:

  • Commercial drones
  • Proving the technical capabilities of mobile networks to provide high speed, wide area and secure connectivity for commercial drones.
  • Demonstrating mobile networks capabilities to mitigate key regulatory concerns such as safety, user registration and no fly zones. Working with a group of about 12 mobile operators and device manufacturers to create technical guidelines and regulatory positions.
  • Communicating this information to global stakeholders
  • Developing “mobile friendly” regulatory frameworks
  • Current focus areas include: spectrum for vehicle safety devices, data privacy and security in IoT, regulation for connected cars and working with GSMA’s regional teams to input on local regulatory consultations.
  • The core team is made up of about 9 staff within GSMA, most of whom work on other projects as well as this one, their expertise ranges across several regulatory areas, technical and marketing
  • GSMA relies on its members to provide resource to work on our projects, these external resources have other responsibilities beyond our projects, keeping them focussed on our projects requires great influencing and stakeholder management skills.  We currently have 12 organisations contributing to the Drones project, with 1 – 3 people from each organisation

The role will report into the IoT Business Enablers Senior Project Manager. This role is within the Internet of Things Programme.

Key tasks include

  • Driving our external contacts to provide timely contributions to the development of project deliverables
  • Developing understanding of the key topics, in order to support the subject matter experts, and provide useful input when reviewing project deliverables
  • Take the lead in planning and monitoring the project deliverables and budget during the entire project lifecycle
  • Take responsibility for implementation of appropriate project methodologies, including change and risk management, and quality control
  • Effectively manage all aspects of project related documentation and communication including reporting.

Criteria for Selection

  • PRINCE2 Foundation, or other professional project management accreditation essential
  • Evidence of high quality delivery in complex and challenging environments, involving both internal and external suppliers and stakeholders
  • Relevant experience in areas such as IoT, Regulation, Commercial Drones or Telecoms
  • Experience managing external working relationships and building strong internal and external business relationships.
  • Excellent and proven organizational skills.  Ability to manage a number of concurrent projects without losing focus.
  • Demonstrates sound judgement in the escalation issues and the formulation of solutions
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills on an individual or group basis
  • Experience in organizing project teams, including planning and reporting
  • Ability to work as part of a team, supporting other team members in a busy multinational environment.
  • Fluent in English, with a high standard of written English

 

Internet of Things Programme

The Internet of Things Programme is an ecosystem development initiative helping operators accelerate the delivery of new connected devices and services. This will be achieved by optimising networks and developing key enablers to support growth within the Internet of Things (IoT).  We have about 30 FTE on the programme and work with a large number of mobile operator and eco-system representatives who contribute to our work.
