GSMA – The Role

Reporting to the Head of Events – Europe, the Event Director will be based full-time in Barcelona, Spain, and will have both internal and external facing responsibilities. The Event director will be responsible for assisting the Head of Events – Europe working across functional areas for MWC in in all aspects of event setup and delivery. The primary responsibilities and skills required include but shall not be limited to:

  • Overall management - Assisting the overall management of the Mobile World Congress, working across functional areas to coordinate key input activity to achieve financial and operational goals.  This responsibility includes leading regular project calls on behalf of the Head of Events – Europe, coordination of the different strategic and operational taskforces/working groups, coordination of key programs within MWC  

  •  Contract negotiation and management - Negotiation of contracts and management of suppliers from specification development, tender process & supplier selection, preparation of service level agreements (SLAs) and contracts to final implementation of agreed service on site. This relates to opportunities for the MWC which are not specific to other functional areas or which can be more efficiently managed from the Barcelona office than elsewhere

  • Committee administration and management – The project management of key areas of the Congress is run through a committee structure. Management and, where appropriate, chairing of the committee meetings.  Production and distribution of documentation relating to the committees.  Chasing of committee actions

  • Financial support: P/L management; including supervision of monthly forecast reporting working closely with the Head of Events - Europe and finance business partner, monthly status report of different projects/programs and management of the program office budget

  • Barcelona city-wide business opportunities – Proactively identify new business opportunities with Barcelona individuals, entities and/or public institutions which secure additional revenues for GSMA and also strengthen local relationship management through services provided across the City of Barcelona (outside the event venue). Negotiation, closing and documentation of these opportunities for handover to operational/ implementation teams

  • Barcelona local relationship management – Relationship building with Barcelona entities and/ or individuals in general where their support of the Mobile World Congress is essential or desirable. Represent Head of Events – Europe with local partners and associations as required

  • Information gathering and problem solving Ability to research, organize, analyze information and produce documentation and presentations to assist Head of Events – Europe. Seek out opportunities to improve organizational operations and results through strong management. General support to the Head of Events – Europe and ensuring quality of customer experience

  • General support to the Head of Events – Europe

  • Other Barcelona-specific activities – Management of other activities which can be more effectively managed from the Barcelona office than elsewhere

Criteria for Selection

  1. Demonstrable leadership skills in a fast paced event role, ideally with an international focus

  2. Strong negotiation skills and a high capability of influencing and persuading at a senior level in various sectors

  3. Thrives working under pressure and autonomously

  4. Strong management skills (including people, budgets and vendors) ideally within an international framework

  5. Independent thinker well able to create solutions and see projects through from inception to completion

  6. Confident managing large budgets and identifying efficiencies

  7. Excellent communication both English & Spanish written/oral. Fluency in Catalan a bonus

  8. Strong team player, acknowledging that the wider team is spread out on an international basis.
